“The biggest trap for women, when it comes to power, is sex.” Scilla Elworthy
It comes as no surprise when the story of widespread sexual abuse by powerful elite in the entertainment industry or our religious institutions is brought to light by the #metoo campaign. A sign of solidarity is shown when those who are brave enough, break the silence and speak up against society that places inequality at its root.
#metoo is a wakeup call about the prevalent distortion of sexual energy and behavior in our culture and lives, and an opportunity to recognize where this occurs in all its forms on a daily basis.
Our distortion sells the idea that women have power over men through sex. Our entire programming from a young age is constantly reinforced by the advertisement and entertainment industry. If we’re honest, we can all think of times we’ve been less than authentic and indeed have felt this manipulative form of power in sex, and have used it. But power over men is not the solution; it perpetuates the toxic dynamics of patriarchy and celebrates a ‘power’ that doesn’t last.
It is time to embrace power with (not power over) by becoming very conscious of the ways in which we misuse our sexuality, and embrace what we are most terrified of: the power of our shine. We have the power to become the true partners we are asking men and women to be.
The time of justifying the manipulation of our sexual energy by our self and by others so that we can feel more empowered in our own identity, needs to end. It is this manipulation and inauthenticity that allows us to feel and use power over, from which we can only create ways of manifesting change that focus on “against” rather than “with.” This is part of the distortion that needs to be integrated fully, if we truly choose to manifest the new “norm” we are so desperate to see.
But power over men is not the solution; it perpetuates the toxic dynamics of patriarchy
